Legacy Endowment Campaign

Brandywine Workshop and Archives: Diversity-driven and connecting global communities through the Visual Arts since 1972

In the fall 2022, Brandywine Workshop and Archives will culminate a year-long series of special events and programming that celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

We have established the Legacy Endowment Campaign to stabilize key staff positions— executive director and deputy director of programming—and fund a range of Artist-in Residences that will create more opportunities for local artists, national and international visiting artists, and continue our commitment as a diversity-driven institution. The goal is to raise $5 million by June of 2025.

Auction Galleries in October 2021 and cash pledges from Board Members.  The Legacy Endowment Fund will again be highlighted at a Benefit Auction at Swann Auction Galleries in NYC, March 31, 2022. And global artist El Anatsui has donated a new work of art to
be auctioned March 2, 2022 at Sotheby’s London Auction House. Additional donations have come in from artist Sam Gilliam (large water-color) and Willie Cole (bronze sculpture).

Any artists or art collectors who wish to donate artwork for sale or make a cash gift to benefit the Legacy Endowment Fund to help make the organization more financially secure going forward, is asked to contact our founder- president, Allan L. Edmunds or our Benefit Auctions chair Walter E. Allen.

Our investment advisor for the Legacy Endowment Campaign, AllianceBernstein, has shared some Giving Strategies to help guide you as you consider supporting the campaign this year or in the future.

The Season of Giving is Fast Approaching

The Season of Giving is Fast Approaching

Uncertainty lingers…but many charitable giving strategies prevail!

This year’s giving season comes with a new wrinkle: the potential for tax hikes. But amid the unknowns, many sound and stable giving strategies remain.

For donors who are looking to successfully navigate an evolving tax landscape, we’ve  identified three top techniques that continue to deliver:

  • Contributions of Appreciated Stock: help yourself—while helping others—by making charitable gifts in the most tax-efficient way possible. Donors will receive a charitable income tax deduction for a gift of stock, subject to adjusted gross income (AGI) limitations, while permanently avoiding embedded capital gains that may otherwise trigger costly future tax liabilities.
  • Qualified Charitable Distributions: unlike last year, required minimum distributions (RMD) must be made in 2021. Individuals over the age of 70 1/2 can satisfy RMD requirement by donating up to $100,000 from their IRA (provided the gift goes directly to a charity, not to a DAF or private foundation). Donors taking the standard deduction can use the qualified charitable distribution (QCD) option.
  • Charitable Bequests: legislative changes may also impact the estate tax landscape, prompting many donors to revisit their estate plans. This presents an important opportunity to evaluate how your charitable goals, and the organizations you support, may fit into your lasting legacy.

Now is the Time

Identifying the best donation strategies takes time, as does coordination with tax and investment advisors. To ensure a smooth and effective year-end gift, an early start is advisable.

In addition to your generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure, donors and volunteers like you have another way to help us: your testimonials! Please share this page and encourage others to make their year-end gifts today.

If you have any questions about this information or about making your year-end gift to Brandywine Workshop and Archives, please email Allan L. Edmunds.

    • Conducting Board-led fundraising events (for example, the Lifetime Achievement Awards Gala and art auctions)
    • Establish a capital reserve fund for the repair/replacement of facilities and equipment.
    • Establish a cash reserve fund to cover a minimum of three months of basic operating costs

Brandywine Workshop and Archives (BWA) has started its annual Friends Membership drive and it will continue through December 31st. Look for related stories in upcoming emails and newsletters.
This year’s brochure cover highlights a 2020 lithograph print by Willie Cole and shares exciting news about our fast-growing (over 4,000 registered users nationwide) free, online database  Artura.org, our new institutional partnerships, and news of the 50th Anniversary year-long celebration in 2022. The celebration will culminate with The Lifetime Achievement Awards Gala on October 15, 2022 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

We anticipate reaching many milestones over the next year and your support now and throughout the year will have a tremendous impact on our success. In early October 2021, we had a very successful Benefit Auction at Swann Auction Galleries. This was the first of our dedicated fundraisers to build out Legacy Endowment

Fund. We are also bringing on new staff and reviewing the responsibilities of long-term staff in anticipation of our founder-executive directors, Allan Edmunds.
BWA is preparing for Brandywine 2.0 — our next stage of evolution and growth.

Since in-person programming remains an ongoing challenge due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to balance programming with online/remote offerings such as our ArtistNConversations, a range of artist interviews, and entertaining and informative exhibitions shared free online. Wherever possible, programming will be a hybrid mix of in person events, web programming, and online video recordings shared over digital formats such as Artura.org and social media platforms. The Artura Teacher’s Guide, now in its second edition, will soon be available for free download in late October.

Please stay in touch through our newsletters, What’s New Now, and by visiting our websites and social media platforms for updates on new works of art being produced at BWA. And remember, whatever membership level you choose, you are making a statement about the importance of Brandywine and its diversity-driven mission, intergenerational and high impact programming.

Your support is always appreciated and highly valued.

Also, we would like to remind all potential supporters that the purchase of a print from our visiting artist residency series helps fund operations. Visit brandywine.art to learn more about what is available and explore another way to support us now.
