Brandywine Workshop and Archives’ ArtistsNConversation series continues on Thursday, December 14, with Tyler Yvette Wilson and Tim McFarlane, whose work is featured in BWA’s current exhibition, Flowing Abstraction: Contemporary African Diaspora Printmaking. They will discuss their lives, work, and experiences as BWA Visiting Artists with curator, educator, author, and arts administrator Klare Scarborough, PhD, who contributed Flowing Abstraction’s catalog essay. Join us for this in-person event to hear from and meet the creative people behind the art on the walls.

Wilson is a multidisciplinary artist who works primarily with text, photography, and video. She blends children’s motifs and autobiographical, current, and historical narratives to discuss the troubling foundations that underlie most of Western society and to expose the malleable nature of history. Wilson was raised in Austin, TX, and Atlanta, GA.

McFarlane’s paintings and works on paper examine the fluid and contradictory nature of memory and place, with an emphasis on color, multilayered systems, and process. Much of his work is informed by everyday observations of the visual impact of human activity and engagement with the outdoor environments of his native Philadelphia.

Flowing Abstraction highlights the creative process and the flow of artistic ideas and knowledge as revealed in abstract prints made at Brandywine over the past five years by eight artists of varied African, Caribbean, and African American heritages and nationalities. Wilson and McFarlane are joined in Flowing Abstraction by El Anatsui, Enise Carr, Adama Delphine Fawundu, Sam Gilliam, Julie Mehretu, and Kebedech Tekleab.

This free, open to the public ArtistsNConversation will take place in BWA’s Printed Image Gallery—where Flowing Abstraction is on view—upstairs at BWA’s historic Firehouse Building at 730 South Broad Street, Philadelphia.

The exhibition runs from November 9th and remains on view until December 18, 2023.
