The BWA Collection

The Brandywine Permanent Collection

Brandywine Workshop and Archives’ Permanent Collection features the Visiting Artists Collection of prints made by over 450 artists who have participated in BWA residencies. To date, BWA has published approximately 1,100 limited edition fine art prints employing a wide range of techniques, including screen printing, woodcut, lithography, monographs, collages, and mixed-media approaches. BWA’s Permanent Collection is also comprised of more than 300 prints donated by private individuals, artists, and special collections representing the: Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (New York City); Taller Experimental de Gráfica (Havana, Cuba); Hatch-Billops Collection (New York City); and Self Help Graphics & Art (Los Angeles, CA). Work created at Coronado Print Studio and the Serie Project (Austin, TX) are represented in digital file form only.

Prints from the Permanent Collection are exhibited in the Printed Image Gallery and Glass Gallery at BWA’s Philadelphia campus, showcased in traveling exhibitions and on Artura.org, and are available for loan to other institutions. In addition to retaining two of each print published by Brandywine in the Permanent Collection, a number of the limited edition fine art prints made by Visiting Artists are maintained in our print inventory and shared by gift or purchased to establish Satellite Collections at art museums, universities, and heritage centers and are available for purchase by collectors, interior decorators, hotels, professional offices and other establishments.

Paper and Media Archives and Ruth Fine Library

Housed at Brandywine Workshop and Archives, the paper and media Archives encompasses more than five decades of collecting materials ranging from 35mm color slides to audio recordings. At the heart of the Archives is our Artist Files, a rich repository of handwritten and typed correspondence with artists, curators, and historians who have participated in BWA Visiting Artists Residencies, and under the auspices of Brandywine, participated in the creation of wall murals, public service art projects, exhibitions, and international artist exchanges. The Archives also documents Brandywine’s expanding network of Satellite Collections—now numbering 22—established at art museums, universities, and heritage centers across the country.

Complementing the Archives, the Ruth Fine Library—named in honor of Ruth Fine, distinguished artist, curator, and champion of BWA and its mission—offers numerous monographs, exhibition catalogs, art history texts, and scholarly journals charting the historical development of printmaking and its relevance in contemporary art.
