Samella Lewis (1924-2022)



BIOGRAPHY
Painter, scholar, filmmaker, educator, critic, and printmaker Samella Lewis (née Sanders) was born in New Orleans, LA. She received a BA and an MA from Hampton University, VA, and an MA and PhD in art history and cultural anthropology from Ohio State University, Columbus. Lewis was the first African American woman to earn a doctorate in fine art and art history. In 1953, she became the first chair of the Fine Arts Department at Florida A&M University, Tallahassee.

Explore our collections
Our Permanent Collection includes prints made by over 450 resident artists to date. More than 1,100 limited edition prints have been published by BWA as screen prints, woodcuts, offset-lithographs, monographs, collages, and mixed-media works. The Permanent Collection also comprises of more than 300 prints donated to BWA by private individuals, artists, and special collections.

A free, interactive digital archive of culturally diverse art and artists, Artura.org gives visitors access to a wide variety of voices, experiences, and histories not found in any other single open-source educational resource. Our platform allows users to access and interact with art that represents contemporary cultures, histories, and traditions from around the globe.
Artist Residencies
Brandywine fully funds short-term residencies for artists to produce limited edition, original prints using traditional media or a combination of traditional media with new processes based in current and emerging technologies.
