Islam Mahmoud Mohamed Aly is this year’s 2025 El Anatsui Africa-based Fellow. Aly lives in Cairo, Egypt and is the first BWA artist in residence from Egypt. His has a background in book arts and design, holding a Bachelor’s and Master’s, and a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning with a focus on Art Education and Book Arts.

His artistic practice focuses on storytelling, symbolism, and the intersection of migration, memory, and spirituality.  He believes his residency at Brandywine Workshop and Archives would significantly advance his practice by allowing him to study historical and contemporary printmaking, experiment with advanced techniques, utilize the Ruth Fine Library for research, and engage with the BWA community.  His goal is to enhance his printmaking and visual storytelling by merging historical influences with experimental techniques to deepen conversations on migration, protection and resilience.
